Coping doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. Small, intentional practices can help steady the nervous system, reduce emotional overload, and create moments of calm throughout the day.

Here are a few simple tools that can be used almost anywhere.

Pause and breathe with intention.
Slow, steady breathing helps signal safety to the body. Try inhaling through the nose for four counts, holding briefly, then exhaling through the mouth for six. Even a few rounds can help reduce tension.

Ground through the senses.
Noticing what you can see, hear, feel, or smell in the moment can bring attention back to the present. This is especially helpful when thoughts feel scattered or overwhelming.

Name what you’re feeling.
Putting words to emotions—without judging them—can create distance from stress. Saying “I feel tense” or “I feel overwhelmed” is often the first step toward regaining balance.

Break tasks into smaller steps.
When things feel heavy, focus on what can be done right now, not everything at once. Small actions still count.

These tools aren’t meant to replace professional care. They are everyday supports—ways to create breathing room and steadiness as life unfolds. Coping is not about eliminating stress entirely, but about building capacity to move through it with greater awareness and care.
